The Streets of San Francisco ... But Flat?

What would San Francisco be without its steep hills?

Well for one, if would be much easier to walk around and without much effort. It would be easier to park a car and not have to curb the wheels. We would not have runaway vehicles and tennis balls.

On the other hand, we would not have cable cars, beautiful views and quaint neighborhoods. We would not have the many movies and postcard images to view. In fact, San Francisco would not be San Francisco.

By tilting the camera, I attempted to "level" the hills. These images whimsically portray the streets of San Francisco...flat. But thank goodness it isn't!
Since my neighborhood is surrounded by hills, steep hills and more steep hills, I will continue to add new images.

Shelton's nose-to-nose matchups with Browns Pro Bowl center Alex Mack have been a daily attraction at camp. Shelton has won a few of the battles, and he's been humbled on more than one occasion by Mack, one of the league's best interior linemen.

awesome work. But I don't think I would want to use the public toilets. hahahahaha!! I was in San Francisco years ago, and Loved it. Going back this coming Aug 7th. I am so excited. Wow! SF has so many level streets, yet have so many slanted buildings. I wonder how the people keep all their furniture from sliding to one side of the house. :LOL

I had a bunch of pictures taken on the beach next to the ocean and the damn ocean was tilting in every imaginable direction. I used photoshop to straighten everything out.

My brain keeps wanting to correct what my eyes are seeing. I think some of the best ones are those without as many "diagonal" visual cues. The guy who is leaning to appear as though standing upright is a great one, and some of those with porto-johns work really well. Good job!

No offense, but you really haven't answered the question you've asked. SF's topography is about more than steepness. People have built the city to accommodate the topography, and equally, the topography has shaped the city's neighborhoods.

A much more interesting question: what would happen (spatially) if the city were actually level. What if the 'objects' that compose SF were transported onto the topography of Tulsa? All the sudden, the characters and flavors of the city, so divided by the topography, would be brought closer together. Strange juxtapositions might appear when the element of 'height' is removed.

Anyhow, the photographs are a fine start. Good luck!

If you want a change of pace 22nd st between Sanchez and Church is about the steepest street I've ever seen.

Kim Stanley Robinson's novel "The Years of Rice and Salt" builds its SF-equivalent city to the north of the Golden Gate, because nobody sane would build on the other side. You have successfully demonstrated why. :-)
